Osram Light Bulbs

OSRAM is one of the largest lamp manufacturers in the world. Osram was registered at the German Imperial Patent Office in April 1906, today their light shines in more than 140 countries. The name Osram was an acronym formed from the German names for the metals Osmuim and Tungsten, which were used to make the first filaments. The key to Osram’s success is a consistent innovation strategy. Each year Osram invests 5% of sales in research and development. In 1985 Osram was the first manufacturer to build an electronic control system in the base of an energy saving lamp, leading to the availability of energy saving bulbs for the mass market.
Whether for the living room or the office, supermarket or department store, sports arena, swimming pool, street or hospital, Osram’s range of lighting has a tailored solution for every situation. Osram strives to create better light for better living. Light affects our bodies and our biorhythms; bright sunshine tends to make us active and cheerful, the warm hues of sunset help us relax. Artificial light can produce similar effects.
OSRAM made a particularly glowing contribution to the 2006 Soccer World Cup in Germany. Arguably Europe’s most modern soccer stadium, the brand-new Munich soccer arena was fitted out with a hallmark feature: over 2,800 diamond-shaped translucent panels with about a thousand of these panels lit up – corresponding to a total illuminated area of approximately 24,000 square meters. For this purpose over 25,000 OSRAM lamps were used so that the arena could be lit up in white, red or blue depending on who’s playing: either of the two Munich soccer clubs or the national team.
The Earth & Osram
OSRAM endorses the 10 principles of the Global Compact, an alliance between the United Nations and businesses, associations, municipalities, trade unions and nongovernmental organisations. This includes a respect for human rights, non-discrimination in the workplace and care for the environment. All of Osram’s major suppliers worldwide are requested to abide by a corresponding code of conduct.

Halogen Bulbs
Halogen bulbs give off a white light and last longer than standard incandescent bulbs. Lamp life for halogen bulbs ranges from 2,000 hours up to 10,000 hours. The colour temperature of halogen bulbs is about 3000K, making their light appear slightly whiter and cooler than incandescent. They start and warm up almost instantly and can be extinguished and restarted at will. They can also be dimmed easily.
Halogen PAR (Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) lamps are commonly used in residential downlighting and outdoor lighting, hotels and motels, and especially in retail display. MR16 and PAR low voltage lamps are commonly used in museums and galleries, residences, landscape lighting, and other applications where a modest amount of light and excellent beam control are called for. Other types of low voltage lighting are used in residential and hospitality lighting for details and special effects like cove lights and illumination inside and under cabinets.
Fluorescent Lamps
The fluorescent lamp is a the workhorse lightsource for commercial and institutional buildings. It is a low-pressure mercury arc discharge source. Its operation relies on an electrical arc passing through a mercury vapour between two cathodes, one at either end of a glass tube. The electric energy in the arc causes the electrons in the mercury ions to generate visible and ultraviolet energy. The ultraviolet energy in turn excites phosphors which are painted onto the inside of the fluorescent lamp. The phosphors are designed to fluoresce (become luminous) and radiate particular colours of white light, which is how we can offer interna (very warm white), warm white, white, cool white and daylight colours. This uses the principle of fluorescence, hence the name fluorescent, in which minerals exposed to ultraviolet light are caused to glow.
A fluorescent lamps requires a ballast to work properly. A ballast is an electrical component which starts the lamp and regulates the electric power flow to the lamp.
T5 & T8 Fluorescent Tubes
Good colour rendering fluorescent lamps require the use of rare-earth phosphors, which are more expensive than standard phosphors. The T8 (1 inch diameter) tube uses only two thirds of the phosphor as that required by the T12 (1.5 inch diameter) tube which was its predeccessor. Today lighting manufacturers are switching to T5 (5/8ths inch diameter) which uses even less phosphor. The smaller diameter also gets the phosphors closer to the arc, increasing the efficiency of light generation.
Lumilux bulbs and our environment
In addition to the technical and ecomomical benefits there is an other good reason to choose Lumilux from Osram, its environmental friendliness. Lumilux lamps have a very low mercury content. T8 fluorescent tubes have less than 3mg of mercury content. The RoHS requires less than 5mg of mercury content. Due to their longer life, this means there are fewer lamps to dispose off. They are also fully recyclable.
